RAMSEY, NEW JERSEY — The Seton Hall Pirates were stripped of a chance at a game-winning field goal in a 14-13 loss @ Don Bosco Prep in the first round of the playoffs Friday night.
A controversial call with 20 seconds left in the fourth quarter left The Pirates stunned at Don Bosco’s 25 yard line after frantically spiking the ball on fourth and one. The Prep drove down the field with under a minute left, but on third and 10, The Prep completed a nine-yard pass to the sideline but the referees somehow called the runner down by “forward progress,” keeping the clock running with no timeouts left.
The Prep took the lead off freshman running back Kyle Monangai’s first touchdown of the season, and they held the lead until Don Bosco tied it in the third quarter.
The Prep then took the lead again in the beginning of the fourth quarter thanks to Michael Mughetto’s touchdown run, but a missed extra point gave SHP a 13-7 lead. Don Bosco then took their first lead of the game with 1:14 left, and Seton Hall’s last-minute drive came up short after a chaotic last 25 seconds.
The Prep’s season ends with a 2-8 record, but the effort and pride the players showed will never be forgotten by those who followed the season.
